Ending Poverty: You Shall Plant Vineyards and Reap Their Fruit

Spring 2005 - One Day, One Credit Workshop
FE226 Topics in Ministry
Sponsored and Faciltiated by the Poverty Initiative in cooperation with Field Education staff

In the last 30 years, poverty has worsened in the United States, including the wages and living conditions of farm workers. This seminar will explore the recent success of the Coalition of Immokalee Worker’s Taco Bell boycott that has meant doubling the wages of Florida tomato pickers and establishing fairer labor standards for many low-wage workers across the South and the rest of the United States. Tom Morello, former guitarist for Rage Against the Machine has said about this boycott, "Today the Immokalee farmworkers struck a blow for dignity and human rights in the workplace and received the long overdue raise they have been fighting for. This is a major victory for the workers and demonstrates that by standing up and standing together, we can overturn any injustice. By standing up and standing together, we can change the world." This seminar will explore the role the religious community played in this boycott and will analyze lessons learned for religious collaboration with poor people’s organizations.
