Report back on MLK Day: A Call to Witness and Action
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Poverty Initiative, on its January 2010 Poverty Immersion Course, joined the Philadelphia Student Union at "A Call To Witness And Action: End School Violence In All Its Forms" - an event that included a march and a rally focusing on the many forms violence students face in Philadelphia public schools. Responding in part from recent incidents between students along racial lines that have received much local media attention, the young leaders of PSU broadened and deepened how violence is to be understood - not only focusing on the interpersonal but on the larger, structural violence that results from an inadequate, underfunded public education system. The event was powerful and reflected the sophistication of these emerging leaders.
